Martin Sheen and James Baldwin, Celebrity Encounters

James Baldwin

One person I met was the author James Baldwin, in Istanbul, Turkey.

For my junior year in college I chose to attend a college in Istanbul, and James Baldwin came to my friend's 21st birthday party. I admired Mr. Baldwin's writing a lot, and don't recall a word I said to him, as I was a bit star struck.

Two of his most well known books are The Fire Next Time and Go Tell it on the Mountain.

Martin Sheen

My husband rode his mountain bike up a mountain trail several weeks ago, and there was an older man hiking down the trail, by himself.

My husband thought "that looks just like Martin Sheen" and when they met on the trail, they talked pleasantly for a few minutes and my husband said to himself "That IS Martin Sheen."

My husband refrained from letting him know he was recognized, and they were just two friendly men on the mountain.

We LOVED the recent movie The Way
, starring Martin Sheen and directed and produced by his son, Emilio Estevez. This movie takes place on the centuries old Pilgrim Road in Northern Spain, as Sheen walks the holy way in honor of his fictional son. Beautiful movie and gorgeous scenery in Spain.

And I am a bit jealous my hubby got to chat with Mr. Sheen.

Who have you met? I am guessing Buttercup has met some famous people :)

That was really nice of your hubby not to mention the recognizing...I'm sure that made Mr. Sheen feel he had his privacy, if not on a mountain, where else?!

I met Val Kilmer in Martha's Vineyard. I always carry a little travel notebook in my purse and I approached him and asked for some words of wisdom. He wrote something in my book...I can't remember now. I don't think I would ever be that bold again. Looking back, I think I was almost rude, although he seemed very jovial!

XO,
Jane

I've got no famous encounters to share. I enjoyed reading yours though and I think it's great that your hubby didn't mention recognizing him. I'm sure it's nice for a celebrity to get out and just feel like a normal person.

In 2010, I spent a very enjoyable afternoon aboard a river cruiser in the south of France with Chris de Burgh and his family. We happened to end up sitting next to his daughter (whom I did not recognize), and were joined by the parents a little later. We chatted very pleasantly for a couple of hours until the cruise ended.
I never told him that I did not like his music very much but was listening to very different stuff back in my teens in the 1980s, when he was at the height of his popularity.

Love that account of your husband's crossing paths with Martin Sheen. I, on the other hand, have not crossed paths with any celebrities. ;) blessings ~ tanna

That was very cool of your husband not to make a big deal of it.

How special for your husband! I love Martin Sheen. The closest I've gotten to a celebrity was Richard Simmons some years ago. I had a picture taken with him

Your husband is a kind and thoughtful man. I am on the list of not meeting anyone well known or famous....that I know of :)

Hi there, I haven't yet seen The Way but heard it is so good. I think it is wonderful your hubby met Martin. My brother and sil have met him at a conference and told me what a wonderful, godly man he is. I've met a lot of "famous" people when I was young; mainly rock stairs.
Thanks for sharing. Enjoy the warmth of Ca.
Hugs, Noreen

Great for your husband to just have a chat. I knew some Swedish film people, writers, and even ballet dancers in my younger days. I would have loved to meet James Baldwin so much more than someone in Hollywood. I met a few of those too, including our Gov. Brown w. Linda R. a long time ago.

How cool is that? I respect your husband for not calling attention to Mr. Sheen's celebrity status. They were both just out enjoying nature. They met on the path of life. That is how it should be.

I would like to read the books that you wrote about and see the movie. I will put those things on my list.

I don't remember ever meeting a celebrity. It has never taken much for me to be star-struck around regular people - - - like good preachers, lawyers etc. Over the years, many of them have become dear friends through our church memberships. I'm glad your husband let Mr. Sheen have his anonymity, too. Yes, Buttercup should have some to tell - - - she does get to go to a lot of plays and TV shows.

How lovely that your husband got to meet Martin Sheen.
We met Mark Knophler from Dire Straits and got to shake his hand.
We were at a concert and staying in the same hotel.
Just want to say thank you for your kind words with regards to my brother in law.
Enjoy the weekend

How neat! I would love to meet Martin Sheen, too. I've met several authors over the years. Two that I'll mention are Adriana Trigiani and Charles Frazier. They are both wonderful and I was so excited to talk with them. I'm pretty friendly so if I see someone...I'll talk with them! lol Sweet hugs!

I like the way that your husband treated the celeb...

Here in the Okanagan we don't see many, but when George Clooney was in town shooting a movie, apparently most of us were pretty laid back.

Your husband was very kind not to mention or acknowledge that he knew who he was talking to.. After all, if you cannot find a bit of privacy on a mountain, where can you?

Thank you so much for your kind comment and most welcome visit.
No, as a matter of fact I have not made a chipmunk or squirrel finger puppet.. I just finished the Theatre, so I have not had any plays... If there were still young children in the house, there would have been, that I am sure of.

Penny

I have met several....Pam Dawber, Beau Bridges, Cheech Marin, Rene Russo, and best of all.......KEVIN COSTNER. Right now, that's all I can remember, but I've met others who elude me at this moment.

[I was extras in their movies for days]

Your post has reminded me to find a copy of the DVD The Way and watch it.
It's always lovely when one meets a person one admires, especially unexpectedly when out and about.

I think I would act just like your husband. I've never been one to be star struck. After all, they are people just like us. I do admire Martin Sheen as an actor. :) Have a wonderful rest of the week. Tammy

Hi Terra. Thanks so much for stopping by my blog.

That was cool you met a famous person. I met Phyllis Diller once. Does that count?

Hope you have a nice Wednesday. Susan

Awesome!!!!! I would love to meet Martin. I'm SO looking up that movie.

BTW, I can't think of Martin without thinking of the audio Stories I Only Tell My Friends by Rob Lowe. You should check it out. It's fabulous and he mentions Martin a few times since he grew up with his boys (Charlie and Emilio).

I have met Cornelia Wallace which was fascinating. She talked to us for hours, and she was so beautiful and full of life. I have also met Rosalyn Carter who was lovely and sweet. And Billy Carter in the parking lot of the Holiday Inn. My MIL and I got his autograph on Holiday Inn stationary. ;-) I have also met various governors and politicians through the years.

I have met Tom Selleck and was rendered speechless. He is GORGEOUS. Much better looking in person if that's possible.

I met two of the Munchkins and got to hold hands with them! Very exciting for me, even as an adult which I was when I met them at a movie event.

I have met Charles Lord Spencer, Princess Diana's brother. Gorgeous voice and TALL. He towered over my six foot husband.

And I have met the man who played Tarzan, Johnny Weismueller (sp).

There are probably others I am forgetting.

I would love to meet Billy Graham. I almost did once, but time was an issue. I would have liked to have met Shelby Foote, Winston Churchill, George Washington, Lafayette, and Eleanor of Aquitaine, who is an ancestress. I would say Jesus, but I have met him, just not eyeball to eyeball which is coming and will be the most exciting day of my life. :-)

P.S. I saw Vanessa Redgrave at Easter services at St. Thomas Episcopal in NYC, and she swept in wearing a cape. Very exciting. And we saw Dudley Moore walking his dog on the same trip. :-). My cousin sat with Elizabeth Taylor on a plane flight. She talked to her and didn't realize who it was till she took off her glasses, and those eyes arrested her! Ms. Taylor asked my cousin where she went to school, where she was going, and all about her life. Just a wonderful, friendly lady.

You never know who you"ll see pop up!
