What did you plant over the weekend?
I planted some Red Sun sunflower seeds. The packet says "vivid crimson red". In addition to the golden sunflowers, these sound gorgeous, so I planted seeds in my vegetable garden, some around my strawberry plants.
The stems will be tall so the sunflowers won't shade my veggies or strawberries, or that is my theory :)
My friend gave me the seeds so I will think of her as the plants grow.

Squirrel and Sunflower in Our Garden

I have written before about my black squirrel who

visits our garden and plants raw peanuts. That post was on 2/8/08 in case you want to read it. Well, now a grey squirrel visits too, and climbed up to a precarious

perch on our 10 foot tall sunflower. If you look carefully you can see the twine in lower right corner that is tieing the sunflower to our roof. After the sunflower fell over, I tied it and it recovered.
My husband took this photo from inside the house, and it seems very cheerful to me. I hope it gives you a smile.

Volunteer Sunflower and Me on Christmas Day

Hi Friends,
I love this sunflower so much that I asked my dh to take this photo on Christmas Day.

We have been watching this sturdy plant which was not planted by us, and is a true volunteer. It pushed up through the soil on about November 1, maybe thanks to some dear bird gardener. No one in their right mind would plant a sunflower seed here in November. It even survived some very cold frosty nights, when I had to scrape frost from my car's windows in the morning.

What a gallant flower friend, and for me, a symbol of God's caring and hope for the future.
