Pet spider, pet three legged mouse, a magician's rabbit and mystery chrysalis

What is this small white hanging object? Any experts on insects reading my blog? To me it looks like some kind of chrysalis, about an inch long, hanging on my arbor. The central part is round and it has two pointed "wings", one on each side.  It is only one or one and a half inches tall.

And while I am talking about mother nature and wildlife, here is my pet spider that lives in my bathroom. He or she only comes out at night and is rather shy.

When my hubby and I first married, we had a pet daddy long legs spider that lived in our bathroom. We put up a sign telling guests not to bother the spider. In that same rented house a tiny grey mouse appeared and it only had three legs. We thought it was cute and left out food for the poor little mouse. So our first pets as a couple were a spider and a mouse. Is that too strange for you? Feel free to laugh.

What is the oddest pet you have had?

P.S. I also had a pet bunny when I was a child, which my grandfather pulled out of his top hat when visiting us. Grandpa was Elmer Pelkin, a professional magician. So I could say I had a rabbit of magical origins, another unusual pet.

The descendants of that spider and mouse still talk about you and your compassion.

I'm not sure we had any strange pets through the years. Our sons brought a garter snake home and kept it for a while but then it managed to escape ( luckily outside). We also had an injured pigeon which was very tame and had a leg band. It stayed years and would shock people by landing on their shoulders when you weren't expecting it. ( We contacted the organization whose number was on the band but they never responded ).

I must say you are the only one I've ever known who's had a pet spider and mouse. There used to be a daddy long legs that would always be on the ceiling above the shower in my bathroom. I told him he could stay so long as he didn't come down and invade my space. If he did that I couldn't guarantee that he wouldn't get washed down the drain.

No spiders or mice for me! Actually we've only had a dog and a few cats... :)

Oh my! A three legged mouse and a daddy long legs spider for pets...and now another spider...well, hey, if they made you smile, then so be it. That little 3 legged mouse was very grateful for the food I am sure. As long as (she) didn't have a lot more little mice to run around in the house it would be okay, I guess. LOL. We have funny lizards running around outside on our porch. Some of them think they own the place and will get very territorial when anyone or thing invades their territory. We named one very protective lizard "Lizardo". He was on the porch railing by the front door to greet us every time we'd come and go. We didn't feed him, but he found plenty of bugs to eat outside. As long as he stayed outside he was welcome to stay. I don't like lizards in the house, or spiders either for that matter, and I probably wouldn't have been as charitable to a mouse as you were. Oh, I don't know what kind of chrysalis that is either...very strange looking. Keep watching it and see what "develops".

Oddest pet... hmmm. Nope, just had dogs and a cat... and a mouse way back when. Well, the cat was weird as all get-out at times, but, hey, most cats are. I dunno, maybe the pet mouse I brought home from biology class in high school... because my dad said okay. Ha! I had it for three years and we learned to "talk" to each other. Or does that make ME odd? LOL! I searched the net for your hanging white thingamajig... closest I came was maybe a malformed bat. When you find out, let us know! Blessings to you, Terra!

I have no idea what that white thing that is hanging on your arbor. And I'm really impressed you had a mouse and a spider as pets. We've only had a bird, dogs, cats and two hamsters. I guess it's pretty boring around our house. I do NOT like spiders, snakes, lizards or any other creepy crawlers and that includes mice. Sorry. :-)
Blessings,
Betsy

Interesting. Wonder what the little winged thing could be. I find it interesting the things we are afraid of because basically that's what we are taught. We are always trying to separate ourselves from nature by trapping and poisoning. The fact that both you and hubby wanted to protect the spider and the mouse tells me of your kindness. Have a good Friday.

I like spiders. I let them stay inside but we have a deal… as long as they’re not jumping on me as I shower, we’re good. They eat the flies and their webs make the best Halloween decorations!

No pet spiders around here. They would meet the bottom of my shoe (foot not in it) to be rid of them.

We had a pet mouse named Sigmund which my husband carried on a plane, long before there was the security like there is today.

I usually leave any spiders in our house alone. I figure if they can survive out three cats they deserve to live!

I looked up your grandpa! In Magicpedia it says he billed himself as "The Man Who Walks Away From His Shadow." Amazing! The strangest pet I have ever had was a big duck that my sister and I called Caesar. This was when I was about ten or eleven years old. Our house (in south Florida) sat up about two feet off the ground. Caesar, believe it or not, lived with an actual rope leash around his neck. One morning in June of 1968 (I remember it as being right about the time that RFK was assassinated), we found Caesar way up under the house, his rope taut and stretched as far as it would go. He was dead; we theorized that a dog had chased and killed him but how we could prove that, I don't know. I can still see him in my mind's eye. He was an attractive duck. I don't do insects; you are a braver woman than I! xoxo

I had a pet spider in one of our bathrooms a few years ago. It would come out for me and I'd feed it. Then hubby killed it without telling me. The ass! ~Andrea xoxo

Never seen anything like the little white thing. I can not kill a spider, or any insect. To keep my husband from killing spiders in the house, I catch them and let them outside. Oh, poor little mouse. Glad you kept him and fed him. That's so sweet. The most unusual pet I've had was a baby possum. It was adorable; would hang by it's tail from my finger.

I've had birds, turtles. bunnies and dogs. I have gently removed insects from my home to bring outdoors. As far as mice, when you see one, you generally have about 50 more hiding and multiplying in walls or crevices. You can become infested with these rodents. Perhaps get a hamster! All in all, you are a very special person for your love of all creatures!

All creatures come from our Lord, he gave them their lifes. So I am happy, that you support even some "special kinds" of pets. All need love and wait for salvation . . .

No mouse, or spiders in my house. I hate them both with a passion. My older brother had lots of creepy crawlers when I was a kid and every single time they'd get out of their cage/tub/aquarium etc they would end up in my bedroom. I swear he did it on purpose. Anyway, no creepy crawling things in my house. We had dogs growing up, and I had cats when we first got married. Spider and mouse for pets...count me out

This sounds very, very sweet. We have Spiders, too, and Hubby tells me not to kill them as they eat away insects.
I respect that... from a distance!
The mouse, though, did you tame him/her?

I guess Marco is the most unusual pet I've ever had, unless you count some of the many fish we've kept over the years. Gregg had a pair of golden arowana for a couple of years until they outgrew the tank he was keeping them in and he had to give them away.

Hi Terra! We had a monkey when I was about 5. Her name was Betsy and she was very naughty. She was very high strung and LOVED my dad. We enjoyed her but she had to go to the zoo eventually.
