2020 is really here! Some Bits and Bobs

  • "All of us invent ourselves. Some of us just have more imagination than others. " Quote by Cher, living legend. This is the January 2 page on the daily calendar I bought for myself and also for my niece, and the calendar is titled "Wild Words from Wild Women".
  • My January aim is to buy no books in bookstores or online in January, because I have hundreds of books on my TBR (to be read) shelves, enough to last me for many years. So far I am keeping this resolution.
  • I am reading "Rules of Civility" by Amor Towles and "Miss Budge in Love" by Daphne Simpkins, a Kindle book.
  • In the first week of January I went to a movie theater and saw "Little Women" and enjoyed it immensely. I was very happy to be in a theater and plan to do that many more times in 2020. Number of times I saw a movie in a theater in 2019, Zero. I bought bottled water and buttered popcorn, our local Indie theater uses real butter. I read that theaters make their money not on the movies but on the food. I am picky about what films I watch and will have to keep a look out for good films when they are in town. Give me suggestions!

  • On December 21 a friend and I saw "The Nutcracker Ballet" by our local ballet company. It was accompanied by a 52 piece orchestra. I have seen the production about 15 times. It is always new, colorful and upbeat. In 2017 I bought a sparkly red nutcracker there to add to my collection, which is in the photo above.
  • I am still praying asking God to send rain to put out the raging bush fires in Australia. I am so worried about the people, the trees, and the wildlife. The poor little koalas can't run fast. Also I am praying that rain will end the severe droughts in South Africa, Zimbabwe and other African countries.
  • Women's Bible studies begins January 16 and the book we will use is "Discovering Joy in Philippians". It has book marks to color in it and suggestions for creativity. We like studies that are fun and not severe sombre activities.  Usually about 30 women show up and we divide into groups of around eight ladies.
These bits and bobs are getting rather extensive. I hope 2020 will be a joyful year for all of us.

We don't go to many movies but we did get to see Tom Hanks as Mr. Rogers. I recommend that one if it's still in theaters. I read that anew one called "1917" got rave reviews and awards . I mentioned to Dan we should see it. Actually now I think about it we go regularly to a movie showing once a month Sept-June. These are at the local community college and feature foreign films. Last one we saw Saturday was"Cold War" set in Poland, in Polish with subtitles.

Terra, I love your goals for this new year. I have a friend who gets books on line, and we have similar tastes so she shares them with me. We just finished a study on Philippians with my Women's Bible Study. With Don's stroke, I will not be attending WBS or Kids Time on Wed nights where I taught 4 and 5 year olds.

I long to go to the movies again. I love going alone and just getting lost in the movie.

I check most of my books out of the library as ebooks. I love my library website and spend lots of time looking at new books and mysteries. Do you go to your library website? I love the quote by Cher...how true! Hugs!

Great, newsy post. I think the study on Philipians would be really good. Enjoy it and the time spent with your friends. Have a wonderful 2020 ~ FlowerLady

I'm also determined not to get any more books until my pile of unread ones is a lot smaller. First, though, I have to finish my current library book.

That all sounds wonderful, Terra! You seems so vibrant and happy, and that makes me happy.

Dear Terra, I hope that you, too, will have a lovely year and see many fine movies. I've made a resolution to go to movies more often also. I no longer drive and most of my family and friends aren't movie goers so I've decided to use Uber at least once a month and treat myself to a movie---and that popcorn you wrote about (not sure if the theater uses real butter!)

The Australian wild fires are horrendous. 12.5 million acres burnt. habitat destroyed. loss of human loss. extreme loss of animal life. And rain not predicted for weeks. It makes the heart weep.

Peace.

I haven't been in a theater in probably 15 years or more.

I don't like to go to theaters because patrons can't behave themselves and it drives me crazy. I sat at a movie last week, the couple next to us smelled like weed, talked throughout the movie and scrolled through their phones....(bright lights in my vision--both next to me and in front of me). I don't get it. And don't DARE to say anything, you will get killed (We live in Chicago). So, we wait for good reviews and rent later at home)

I just uploaded a few books to my Kindle. I love a good book, so that was a treat to myself.

Happy New Year to you!

I have the same problem with books. It's hard not to buy more though!
We haven't been to the theatre for a long time either and I just said to Bob we really need to go again. Little women looks good.

Love the new nutcracker. Best wishes in your journey through Philippians. It always seems like a delicious spiritual feast to me, offering ever new insights and, as our pastor says, helping us learn how to live God's way in God's world.

I already fell off the wagon and bought a boxed set of books that my blog friend Nancy from Wyoming Breezes recommended. It's the childrens book set about "The Borrowers". She couldn't believe I had never read them in school. I'll read them and then pass them down to my granddaughter Piper, who loves books just like her Grandma and Mama do. In fact, our boys and my husband are all avid readers too. It's a good thing to have in common.
We saw Downton Abbey and Mr. Rogers in the theater in the past couple of months. I saw a movie with my sister when she visited last spring. Otherwise it had been years since I had been to a movie. Our theater now has recliners which makes it much easier on my back.
Your Phillipians study looks fun. :-)
Wishing you a wonderful day!
Blessings,
Betsy

My husband always wants to go out to see movies but I'm not a fan because here they censor everything. Sometimes it's just not worth going unless we know a movie isn't going to have scenes that might need cutting. I have many books that I need to read and/or give away. Bit by bit trying to sort and organize. Praying for rain Where it's needed and for peace in this world. Happy new year!

Seems a good year to be frugal here, too.
I worry about all the critters and people in Australia, too!

Good for you! It's HARD not to buy books, isn't it? xo

I'm with you on buying books, and I HOPE to hold myself to it. And I'm glad you enjoyed Little Women. I'm looking forward to seeing it soon.

TBR plagues me too and I keep getting tempted to buy new ones, thankfully now, mostly for my Kindle.

I have recently seen a couple of movies on the large home screen installed by my son at home but, otherwise am staying away from them as I am unable to navigate the walks involved in visiting multiplexes.

I don't go to the movies any more because my husband is legally blind and cannot enjoy it with me. I limit the things I do without him to only those things I really really want to do. I do miss seeing movies in the theater.

Don't get me started on books. I am not an avid reader, never was, but I have about 400 books in my Kindle app. Thankfully most of them were either free or 99 cents. Your calendar sounds interesting. I hope to see Little Women soon. Can you believe I know nothing about the story. I think today we might see 1917. The ballet sounds lovely. I saw it years ago when my daughter was very young. Have a great year!

I liked your 2020 goals and, yes, so sad about the fires in Australia - those poor defenseless animals.

About a half of January have passed. I think not to buy any books is easier as long as it is January aim. I’m not sure about February, just kidding. Have happy days ahead.

We very rarely go to see films in theater.

In not too long, they come out on disc, and I get them from our library system. -smile-

We used to follow each other a long time ago until after my rest from blogging - I came back and my computer died. I lost everything and am trying to come back. Thanks for the comment and I hope you will follow me again - I can't tell. Any how - I go to a bible study too. I feel so bad for Australia. Sandie

Love the quote from Cher. I have no business buying books, either, but I've already bought two this year. That's one a week, so I better slow down! I like you intention to see more movies. I really want to see the new Little Women. I'm glad you gave it a thumbs up. Thanks so much for stopping by my blog:)

Oh, I enjoyed every bit and every bob. :) Would you believe the last time we were in a movie theater was when "Pet Detective" was playing? and the time before that was to see ET. I am ashamed to admit that. I do love the quote from Cher.

Terra, thank you so much for stopping by my blog -- lovely to 'meet' you.

Saw the new Little Women and loved it. Glad to hear you enjoyed it and the yummy with-real-buttered popcorn. We share a mutual appreciation and love for C.S. Lewis, and I look forward to sampling some of the book titles you mention here on your posts (some are not familiar). I received gift cards for Christmas to the bookstore, so I have done some online shopping this January for new books. A few have arrived, others I'm still waiting for. But like you, I have such a storehouse of books in my house that are waiting to be read (many of them from the library used book sale), so I hope to hold off on buying any more in the next while.

Wishing you a very happy New Year...
Brenda

Join you in praying for rain. My post today is on movies I've liked. Enjoyed Tom Hanks as Mr. Rogers, Judy and Harriet. Saw one at home and two at the theater. I still like going to movies. Next on my list is Little Women. I know I will like that. Still one of my favorite books.

I love your Bits and Bobs! Movie theaters aren’t what they used to be! Huge reclining lounge chairs and even dine in menus! I love going to a movie! I’ve missed so many this past few months! Hope I can catch them on Amazon.
