The Sisters (a biography of the Mitford sisters) by Mary S. Lovell.
The Six Wives of Henry VIII by Antonia Fraser. When reading books about Tudor times I remember "Divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived" to help me recall the lives and fates of Henry VIII's wives.
Yikes, Jan Karon's Mitford series about the kindly Father Tim did not reach my top twenty either.I love each book in this series, best to begin with the first one, "At Home in Mitford".
Pomfret Towers by Angela Thirkell. My favorite of hers thus far and I adore these covers of the new Virago editions.
Furiously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things by Jenny Lawson. I suggest reading "Let's Pretend This Never Happened" first, Jenny's first book. The author explores her lifelong battle with mental illness with humorous writing.
The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom. Uplifting true story of Corrie being in a concentration camp because her family sheltered Jews in WWII, and how she survived and became a beloved writer and speaker about her Christian faith.
Estes also wrote "Women Who Run With Wolves."

I looked over my list and see the books in this second installment are all written by women. Just an observation. My three favorite all time authors are men though, see the earlier list for their names.
Thank you to all the authors whose books give me such pleasure.Imagine the hours and years they spent perfecting their craft and bringing stories to life. As I know, writing is by its nature a lonesome profession.

1800's (These is My Word's) now reading the sequel (Sara's Quilt).

I have read many of those books but picked up a few new ones! Thanks! I'm into grand-motherhood now so your books would probably not be a good fit for me but what an accomplishment...a published author! I had no idea! COngratulations!

I like books written by women too Terra. I especially like Phillipa Gregory for historical novels and at the moment I am into Ann Cleves for crime fiction. She writes books set in the Shetland Isles, which are very atmospheric. There is also a series on television here in England about her stories. One is called 'Shetland' and the other is called 'Vera'.

Stella Jones, I like Phillipa Gregory too and am reading her books about Tudor times, and the tv show Vera is wonderful; I have thought about reading the Ann Cleves books about Vera.
Sam I Am, you mention you are into grandmother-hood now and many grandmas have purchased my two books as gifts for young moms they know. Lots of good and easy ideas in the books I wrote on how to celebrate Christmas and how to ease the important job of moms with fun ideas.

When I look at this I feel sad because reading has phased out of my life almost entirely the last 2 years. We have a rather harsh situation at home, so I hardly ever have time or strenght to read now, but I will catch up one day!! The story about Henry the 8ths wives always fascinated me, and I remember seing the film when I was a child.

Gosh what a lot of books, puts me to shame as I love reading so much but just don't make time for it and really should!... you have motivated me to do better I think. I just took a peek at the Christmas book you wrote, it is truly lovely. In there I noticed you have given a list of ways to give gifts to those less fortunate which I really liked, I have done this in the past with various charity 'shoe box' gift schemes and you have reminded me I should do it again. Love the Mitford series. Jan Karon is a great storyteller. Congratulations on co-authoring a published book. I've had a few devotionals published -- one in a Gary Chapman book, but to actually have a book published would be exciting. I saw a couple of other books on your list that looked interesting. A great list. I'm a fan of anything Tudor, but I haven't read the Henry VIII title you mention, but I'll be on the lookout for it. The Hiding Place is one of my all-time favorite books. What an extraordinary woman!
