You can plant historic trees' offspring

There is a company that creates offspring of famous trees from cuttings from the historic trees.

You can plant a tree that is the offspring of the Elvis Presley Southern Magnolia from the tree at Graceland, the Moon Sycamore grown from seeds taken to the moon and back in 1971 on Apollo XIV, and the Johnny Appleseed tree from the last remaining tree planted by him, which still grows on a farm in Ohio. The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke in the shade of a Live Oak tree in Selma, Alabama and that tree's offspring is available, and the Live Oak tree growing at the Alamo.

The American Forests Historic Tree Program at www.historictrees.org (800 320-8733) sells these precious trees and many more including the Walden Woods Red Maple and the Gettysburg Address Honey Locust.

I didn't even know something like this was possible. How wonderful to capture a bit of history and link it in your own yard. Have you decided to add any?

I first learned about this company at the Oklahoma City National Memorial. After the explosion, there was obviously a lot of destruction, but one really old tree in the parking lot behind the federal building survived. They named it the Survivor tree and each year they collect the seeds and plant them. You can buy one of the Survivor Tree's offspring through the site you linked to. Pretty neat, eh?!

Hello All,

I work for American Forests, and the program is legit. Our Historic Tree program propagates and sells the offspring of trees connected to famous people, events, and places. Many of the historic trees are landmarks or are recognized as historic sites, and we get permission to collect seeds from these trees.

They have all witnessed a piece of history and we sell the offspring. So, you should definitely plant living history in your backyard. There are so many categories to choose from and they also are wonderful gifts.

Check out the nursery's website at www.historictrees.org.

Thank you for the blog post!!

p.s. American Forests also has a historic tree register where you can nominate trees, including personal trees from childhood.

Hello All,

I work for American Forests, and the Historic Tree Program is legit. We propagate and sell the offspring of trees connected to famous people, places, and events. Currently, American Forests is helping to celebrate Johnny Appleseed's 235th birthday by planting historic apple trees across Midwestern states like John Chapman did himself.

You should definitely plant a piece of history in your backyard. Historic trees also make great gifts, especially since the holidays are coming up.

Visit our website at www.historictrees.org to learn more about the program.

Thanks for the blog post Terra!

p.s. You can also nominate historic trees or your favorite personal trees from childhood on America's Historic Tree Register - www.americanforests.org/htr
