The Windsor Knot, a favorite book with Queen Elizabeth II solving a murder

 

I loved every minute of reading this book and when it ended I had a warm feeling of happiness. I felt comforted by how The Windsor Knot's author, SJ Bennett, portrayed the central character. Queen Elizabeth II is close to 90 in this book and is written as kind, highly intelligent and perceptive as she attempts to solve a crime. A visitor is murdered in Windsor Castle. The Queen's love of dogs and horses and her quiet faith feature in this book, and she is brilliant in dealing with a mediocre intelligence man who tries to solve the case. It seems to me like Bennett knew the Queen well, which she did not in real life. I am giving The Windsor Knot a prime place of honor in my short list of best books I've ever read.

I am happy to learn that there is a second book in this series, All the Queen's Men. That is the title of the USA edition, I rather think I prefer the title of the British edition, A Three Dog Problem. Now you know those dogs must be Corgis or Dorgis, favorites of the Queen. Another in the series is to be published in 2024. I already bought All the Queen's Men.  Anyone else reading this new series?

Book Beginnings: Off the Grid by C.J. Box

C.J. Box is a great writer with a series about the dangers Joe Pickett faces, as he works as a game warden in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming. Joe patrols on his own, sometimes by pickup truck and sometimes on horse back.
This series begins with "Open Season" which is the ideal place to begin reading the series. "Off the Grid" was  published in 2016. My favorite series character is Nate Romanowski, a guy I have a bit of a crush on. He is an expert marksman, will kill people to defend the Pickett family, trains falcons, and at one point was given to climbing naked in trees in remote areas. Oh, he sounds handsome too.
Here is the beginning of "Off the Grid".
"Nate Romanowski knew trouble was on the way when he saw the falcon's wings suddenly flare in the distance. Something beyond his eyesight was coming fast."

Do you enjoy reading mysteries with characters you care about? Then I think the book "The Night Watchman" is for you.
The "night watchman" of the title is an Orlando homicide detective who was shot and almost killed in the line of duty, with his partner killed beside him.
The night watchman, Ray Quinn, is severely injured, in constant pain, and barely able to walk, and working as a night watchman, when a mystery presents itself to him and he couldn't refuse to help.
A young woman's beloved brother is dead and it looks like the brother killed a prostitute, but his sister insists that is entirely out of character and that he was framed.
I read many mysteries, and find that this author, Mark Mynheir, is very talented, creating a gripping plot and characters with depth. Putting his background as a homicide detective to great use, the author has written a book that compells readers to root for Ray Quinn.
At the end of this entertaining novel, I am happy to read that the main character will return in a sequel.
