Potatoes in a pail

I did it! I planted 3 organic heirloom Yellow Finn seed potatoes in my 5 gallon pail.
My husband drilled about 10 quarter sized holes in the bottom of the pail, I tore up a cardboard egg box and put it in the pail for drainage, filled it with one foot of potting soil, and put in the potatoes and covered them with 4 inches of soil.
Now the pail is out on our patio and I can watch and wait.
I picked Yellow Finn because they can be boiled, fried or baked. Usually when grocery shopping we buy russets, since they are so good baked.
I have about seven seed potatoes left, so will plant them directly in the garden and see what the gophers do!
I am so happy when I plant something new to me. What is new in your garden this year?

I love to hear about your garden - I don't have one now. Wish I did!

It looks good! I hope it does well for you and that the gophers leave the ones in your garden alone! :)

It looks like you are well on your way to some delicious taters, Terra!! I have no gophers, but lots of rabbits. Ugh!

I'm going to try strawberries and blueberries this year. It should be interesting!! I love to make pies, so I am excited!

XO,
Jane

Now, this is a bright idea! Potatoes are still cheap, but growing a new variety sounds like fun.
I'll be planting a lot more peas and favas than usual this year. I like having them frozen and ready to eat all winter long.

I am anxious to follow your progress with the potatoes. I am not familiar with this variety but it sounds perfect for many different recipes. Best wishes.

Your taters look good.

The new stuff we 've planted this year are french beans - earlier they did not come up, but this year the plants look promising.

Nothing yet, that's for sure. It is snowing tonight ....sigh... and the two feet of snow on the front lawn still hasn't melted. The side yards are just about clear.... the gardens are dead and horrible looking...... another month before we see anything green.... or maybe even more. The ground is frozen pretty deep....

The newspaper I get is giving out free packets of seeds this week, one per day. So far I have a packet of carrot seeds and one of leeks. So we shall see what does best.
I shall follow your potatoe growing with interest.
Love gardening posts.

What a good idea this is.
I plant my vegetables in raised (really ugly) beds. They are old horse troughs that has rusted out in the bottoms, but I haven't thought about doing the potatoes in them.
Thank you for coming by today. I loved seeing you.

The first plants I ever grew on my own as a child were potatoes in a pot. I tended that plant on our balcony, and it grew and grew. Toward fall, the plant died and I was heartbroken. When my mom was cleaning, she dumped out the pot of dead potato plant ... and found the pot was completely full of baby potatoes. I swear to this day that it was THIS experience that made me catch the gardening bug. Seeing YOUR potato in a pot reminded me of this.

You are quite the gardener. I miss seeing you. It has been a long time since I was visiting you here. I need better organizational skills while blogging. I keep losing followers. Sometime that blogger just steals things away!
I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Anne

Sounds like fun! I could plant just about anything and it be new to me. Ha. I live on a farm and have nothing BUT land to fill with plants -- and do I do it? Nope. I need help!

Oh yum! :o) And how clever to plant in a pot. :o) We planted potatoes in our garden for the first time this year, and they are huge! Actually, they are the only thing that came up. Not sure what happened, a whole garden was planted. I can hardly wait to taste fresh grown potatoes. I have never had them before. :o) We have 4 buckets of tomatoes on our porch and 3 sweet basil plants. They are kind of small, because I keep picking off of them to cook with. :o) They smell heavenly! Can't wait for summer tomato sandwiches on fresh baked wheat bread!!
Have a nice weekend.
Sincerely, Trish
