Swiss chard recipe

Do you like Swiss chard?
I grow the Rainbow Swiss chard, which has stems that are red or yellow or white, since it is so pretty.
Last night I cooked it in my favorite way. First I cut off the thickest stems and sauted the stems in olive oil with plenty of chopped garlic.
I put the rest of the chard in a pot with a steamer tray and an inch or two of water, and steamed it covered until cooked, about 10 minutes.
Drain the chard and toss it with the olive oil, cooked stems and garlic and you have a delicious side dish.
How do you prepare chard at your house?

I can honestly say I have never tried Swiss Chard, but oh my gosh does it ever sound delicious. I am going to have see about changing that.

Hi Sherry and Mumsy, how can I best describe the taste of chard? A bit like kale, a slight bit like Japanese red mustard but not spicy. I would say, like kale. Chard has a bold flavor.
Anyone else who can explain the taste? They sell it everywhere nowadays so you could buy some and give it a try. If you buy a standard bunch, fix the whole bunch since the steaming makes it smaller.

When I was little, I hated when my mom cooked swiss chard. Recently, I steamed it and actually loved it. I think my taste buds have changed. Maybe I will try it your way and love it even more.

I have never (to my knowledge) eaten swiss chard. It sure looks pretty! Do peope only eat it cooked, or do they leave it raw and put it in salads too?

I don't fix chard at my house. Nobody will eat it. That leaf is gorgeous though. More beautiful than tasty I say. :)

Hi Amrita, you could use any strong flavored dark leafy greens, like mustard or spinach. I like olive oil and sauted garlic on most any vegetables.

This is interesting because I just saw an episode on Rachel Ray showing how to prepare this just like you posted. Just goes to show that great minds think alike.

Oh this brought back memories! My mom used to grow Swiss Chard in her garden-I grew up eating but haven't had it since I was a TEENAGER! Looooong time.

I used to love it, after reading your post I am craving it now! :)

We make it exactly the same way. My children prefer Swiss chard to spinach, and my husband and I love both.

Robin and Tracy, I am so glad you like to eat chard; I guess it is not eaten that commonly. Yum.

I didn't grow swiss chard this year, but I will next year, after the way you explain cooking yours. It sounds delish! It is so healthy, that I can't believe that I have never grown it before.
My vegetable garden is over for the year and I will miss the fresh produce so much.
