Today a school near our house is having a sale to benefit the school so of course I HAD to walk over. I found 4 books for a grand total of $5.
For me, buying a used book is a good and inexpensive way to try new authors.
All of these authors are new to me.
The Egyptologist by Arthur Phillips.1922, Egypt, a tomb, a mystery. That is right around the time King Tut's tomb was discovered and I love that period of history.
The Aviator's Wife by Melanie Benjamin. A novel about Anne Morrow, the wife of Charles Lindbergh. I like this type of well researched historical fiction. The Paris Wife, by a different author, is wonderful, for example. That one is about Ernest Hemingway and his first wife, the love of his life.
The Geographer's Library by Jon Fasman. I spent years working with maps in a library so this title grabbed me.
Foxgloves and Hedgehog Days by Daniel Blajan. An eccentric look at gardening written by a city dweller who lived in a sixth floor apartment and then moved to a village. I think the village is in Holland which is where the author lived at the time of publication, which was 1997.
Have you read any of these? Which one shall I read first?
I read the Aviators Wife for my book club and though it was excellent as did every one else. I'd start with that one. : )

I would love to read The Aviator's Wife! I'm still not finished Gift From the Sea! I have had it for years and will read some and then ponder and wander away until I remember it again a year or two later! Now I must find it and be determined to READ IT TO THE END!!!

ReplyDeleteA very eclectic mix there. We have a couple of secondhand bookstores here which are great to browse through every so often. If you bring the books back, you get store credit on your next purchases and can also donate books so it's a win-win. Have a great week. Tammy

ReplyDeleteMy husband shares your love of books. I love the idea of reading a book and then passing it on to someone else, but most readers have trouble doing it tho. You made some good finds. Do you ever read more than one book at a time? My 15 yr old granddoll will often be reading several books at one time. I could never do that. :-)

Another way of finding new authors to read is to visit blogs like yours and read your recommendations : precise, to the point and incisive. There are a few titles there which have been added to my "to read" list.

Oh, books...the loves of my life! Those all look fascinating and we must have the same taste....pretty interested in many different subjects. I like your idea of giving 4 away for each one you bring home. I really need to do that! I'm trying to read what I have without buying any more but that is so hard sometimes. Thanks for all the great recommendations!

ReplyDeleteIt is quite sensible to insist upon giving away a book when you bring a new one into the house. Living in a tiny cottage I must try harder. But, I've just added your books to my list of must reads ..... hee hee. x

I finally went over to reading books on my android tablet. I read them thru the kindle app and get them thru my local library for free. I have to wait for the newer books but find lots of wonderful older books to read. Reading is my reason why a lot of things "just don't get done around here" lol... My favs are historical fiction. A great series is the wilderness series by sara Donaldi. You would thoroughly enjoy... Hugs, LJ
