Door of Mystery

I have been noticing this mysterious door near our home opening onto open air above a cliff.
Do you see the door in the tan wooden wall, above the stone wall?
What happened? What is behind the door? Could people open the door and fall?
Is there a princess behind the door, a captive and waiting for her love to rescue her? Possibly Rapunzel of the fairy tale with her long golden tresses. Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair.
Or an imprisoned ghost.
Calling Daphne du Maurier, here is a plot starter.
Some novelist could write a book based on this strange door to nowhere. Nowhere but air.

  1. Well, let's see....There once was a princess who was locked into the very top floor of the castle by her wicked stepmother.......

  2. Intriguing. I suspect a porch was there at one time, maybe before the road. What does the door look out on? Something lovely? Or might the view have been lovely, in past times, before the road was there? Maybe the porch needed to be replaced, but since the view was no longer what the owners liked, they decided to forego replacing it. (So many possibilities.)

In our own humble home, a couple of years ago, we finally eliminated a door that was never, ever used, in the 36 years since we built the house.

  3. How interesting! I hope it is bolted shut! I'm still reading The Warden and it's very good. I had to read a couple of books from the library that I had requested...now I'm back to it again! Sweet hugs, Diane

  4. Hmmm. Strange indeed! Maybe at one time it opened onto something, or maybe that's how they got rid of guests who had overstayed their welcome. lol

  5. I think if that was on my regular route, I might drive myself crazy wondering about it!

  6. Do you even want to find out? Perhaps the mystery of it is best.

  7. Too bad Walt Disney is no longer around. He would have a good story to tell - of course, as in most of his movies, there would be a dead mother involved.

  8. It's pretty odd alright... maybe a fire escape? They might just have a long rope ladder coiled up nearby inside ... or ... it could be the back escape for ..oh,er.. a clandestine tryst gone awry? .. maybe hubby came home early? ... JUMP! .... or .. maybe unruly party guests get tossed... mmmm.. well, any number of possibilities spring to mind really .... ...

  10. I think someone needs to build steps and rescue the princess/wizard/dragon long alone behind the magic door.

  12. I like all of your creative story ideas. Wanda, are you thinking of the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose? I was there once, there are stairs and corridors to nowhere, and it is very claustrophobic in areas, and a regular mansion in others.

  13. Yes, I believe one can write a story about it! Mystery novel maybe...

  15. Hello, Like all the comments above, my mind is swirling with ideas. I'm thinking that it was a door to have coal delivered back in the day or another utilitarian reason.
    Have a great weekend.

  18. Maybe there used to be something there before the road was built. The house looks quite old. But if I didn't like someone that is definitely the door I would show them on their way out!

  19. I am reading the rest of the comment and it's very funny to read that it's how they get rid of guests who overstayed the welcome. Hahaha!!

I am glad you've received 1/3 of the cards. I hope the two more would arrive soon.

  20. What an interesting building, Terra. I wonder what that door leads to? Very intriguing post, my friend.

Thank you for your kind words today.

  21. Yes it is mysterious. My first thought was if it was in the Tower of London, it would be above the Thames and a convenient way of getting rid of a prisoner!

  22. Looks like old fort with an apartment on top. I would not want to stay there.

  23. Perhaps the inspiration for a fictional book? :)

  24. Now that is very odd in deed. To have a door right there, this does not make sense. It does look like a castle..

Thank you for coming over for a visit and leaving such a sweet note for Finn.
    blessings,

  25. my first thought was Rapunzel, i just loved that story. but you used that plot.
maybe the mafia uses it to dangle people by the legs to make them talk.
or Spiderman or Superman live there and don't need steps.
it doesn't appear to ever have had a porch or steps.. if any thing was there, they did a great job of moving it. i love the photo and the post.

and you are right, those dresses are all about Look at ME and getting in the news

  27. Just fabulous! Is this an optical illusion and there's a walkway behind the wall? Or did there used to be a building there? Or is it a neat way of getting rd of unwanted visitors?
