Shishkebob, and Foreman Grills Question

A meal that is part of any warm weather we have, spring, summer and fall, shishkebob. There are several spellings for this meal, including shish kebab. My computer keyboard doesn't allow for the Turkish typing of sis, which is pronounced shish.
We use metal skewers (shish), some of them are from Turkey and are the best kind which means that the blades are a little flattened and not round, so the meat doesn't slip and turn as you turn the skewers.
I learned to savor this meal the year I was in college in Istanbul, Turkey, where it is a popular dish.
Small pieces of lamb, steak, pork, chicken or shrimp, about 1 or 2 inches across, add lots of veggies and voila.
We like onions, green peppers, tomatoes and mushrooms.
Notice that the meat is on a separate skewer. This is important since the meat takes longer to cook. If you put meat and veggies on the same skewer you can end up with raw meat and charred vegetables.
You may marinate the meat in olive oil and lemon juice or a marinade of your choice, or just baste with the marinade while cooking the shishkebob.
My husband volunteers to be in charge of prep and cooking.

George Foreman Grills
I have read that the George Foreman grills are handy for cooking vegetables, like green beans. Have you tried this? I don't have one of those grills and am thinking of buying one for the convenience of cooking vegetables indoors on the grill. If you have a George Foreman or similar grill, how do you use it?

  1. These sound delicious,Terra! We've a small, older model Foreman grill, and the plates do not detach, making it not quite as easy for cleanup as one might wish, but I've used it for veggies, chicken, hamburgers, and other things indoors.

  2. It has been years since we used ours, but it was convenient and could be used inside. Our kitchen was small, and it got to be tricky in terms of space. But we enjoyed it.

    That is good to know about cooking the meat separately. I have never heard that. Thanks!

  3. I love shish-kabobs! We don't have them often, because my hubby isn't a fan of them. I used to do them on a Foreman grill, but it is difficult space wise. I have a couissinart counter top grill that works well.

  5. Yum - those look delish.
    I am of no help about the grill. I have a GF, but have never used it to cook veggies. The plates on mine can't be removed for easy cleanup, so don't use it often.

  6. We just call them "kabobs" but I love the idea of flat rather than round sticks.
    Don't have a Foreman Grill. Have grilled veggies in the broiler on the oven.

    Oh dear. I have to admit that I have a grill under cover in the back yard and it has not been uncovered in at least three years.

    If I lived near you, it would be yours! ha!

    Just dont grill much anymore.

  11. I need to get some real skewers. I use the wooden ones which have to be soaked and are very hard to turn. I just learned of the method to do the meat and veggies separate! I don't know why it hadn't occurred to me! Anyway, your kebobs look terrific!

    I wish I could help you with the GF grill. I have never owned one.

  13. I like a blog called "Happier Than A Pig in Mud". She has done posts about grilling all kinds of stuff, including vegetables on her GF. I'm almost positive that she did green beans on there in a post not too long ago. I keep planning to drag mine back out, especially since the nest is emptier.

    As for the shishkebob, or however it's spelled, that is right up our alley. We love stuff like that here. I do like to put my vidalia onions on with the meat, even it they get a little overdone, because of the blending of flavors.

  15. We love shush kabobs! My Tom makes them, they are wonderful!! Our George Foreman grill was an old one, it was only for hamburgers!

    I had a small George Foreman grill - where the plates didn't detach .. I'd definitely get another with the plates detaching and making washing up much easier ...

    I am having a serious thought about it before your post ... I had a check up - and may well end up getting one ...

    we call them shish ka bobs. at home in upstate NY we have this meat marinated you can buy in the grocery store called Spiedies
    you can order the sauce or order the meat, bread etc and have it sent overnight- Bob and I are going to do it one day when the hunger for home is too strong! I make a lot of meat for skewers. Chicken and steak. We grill ours outside on the grill. You made me hungry! LOL! Thanks for stopping by my blog! Linda

  26. I love Shish Kabobs...and it is a good tip to do the meat separate. Many of us find out the hard way. :) I had a George foreman...an older model and what ever you want to do just give it a try...most of the time it turns out.

  30. Hi Terra, I have a Cuisinart Griddler. I love it. It comes with removable plates for washing. One side is flat and the other sides are like a grill. You can cook with it open or closed. It is great for bacon, sausage, hamburgers, chicken and shish ka bob. You can use it for pancakes, eggs, grill cheese, grilled sandwiches etc. I love mine in the mornings for bagels or English muffins. Check it out you will love it.
