Golden Poppies and Lavender and reading about Tudor England

Thank you to all my blog sweeties for your birthday wishes. You are each one a treasured friend in my garden of friends.
For today's blog post I saw these Golden Poppies and Lavender on my walk along the bay today.
They are growing two blocks from our house.
The red brick wall gets very hot and holds the heat which California poppies and lavender both appreciate. I think orange and purple / blue flowers on a red wall are an odd combination, but it works and they look right purty.
I had time to read a bit today, and before that I exercised in a pool for an hour and did a wee spot of gardening.
With my reading I get to time travel, in a way, and today I am in the Tudor Court, reading a not yet released book about Henry VIII's sixth wife, Catherine Parr. The book is "Queen's Gambit" and it is the first novel by Elizabeth Fremantle. When I saw the author's name I thought she was born to write fiction about England's royalty.
Do you like to time travel with a book too?

  1. Love the wall and all the blooms flowing over it. Lavender and poppies look great together there. I don't think I would have put that combination together either, but it does work. Wanted to wish you a belated birthday! Seems like forever since I have had time or felt like getting around much in blogland. Hope you have a grand time in England. I love to travel that way, too. ;)

  7. I do not like orange flowers in my garden, but I admire them in others. The garden you show is a very pretty combination.

My daughter does a lot of poppies in California and I love the way they look. Some people do them here, but they only have a 3 week life.

  19. Terra, those poppies made me long, just a little, for California. They are gorgeous. I like to immerse myself in a book but I'm not sure if it's really time traveling.

  20. Terra,
You know what, I have these same poppies along the side of my front yard. I wasn't sure about them at first when we moved here, but now everytime I see them, I smile. The orange color just makes you happy, doesn't it?

I hope you're enjoying your spring so far.

    Love,
    ~Sheri

  25. I am envious of the luxuriant lavender--mine does well here in KY and winters over, but it doesn't become exuberant!

  28. Goodness your garden is lovely! I am not sure we will ever have a garden! But I have a glimmer of hope. I was at a blog yesterday and the blogger said she plants zinnias from seeds and they are so glorious and colorful. Not to mention very reasonable. Giving you a very belated birthday wish! I feel so badly that it takes so long to catch up! I need to find my blog book at I created so I can update it and get better organized! I love your nice comments and I always love visiting here with all your pretty garden candy!
