Monet's Garden

I love Monet's paintings, and have spent quite a bit of time in a museum in Paris, looking deeply in to his paintings of his pond at Giverny.
I like this quote of his, giving directions to his head gardener in February 1900.
Maybe this will inspire us all today.
"Sow approximately 300 pots of poppies, 60 pots of sweet peas, approximately 60 pots of white argemone and 30 yellow... From the 15th to the 25th start the dahlias into growth. Take cuttings from the shoots before my return; think about the lily bulbs."
It would be grand to have a gardener in my employ! Then I could ask them what argemone is.
It would be a dream come true to see the gardens! I do love the quote...I hope the gardener had a big staff!

Giverny is one of my favorite places. Thanks for stirring up sweet memories, especially on a cold and snowy night in New York.

ReplyDeleteOh to be able to have a garden 1/2 even a 1/4 as lovely as Monet's. His paintings in real life are brilliant!! We spent an hour during our Paris trip in October admiring. I think argemone is another type of poppy, native to Chile or Hawaii .. it would be interesting to know for sure. Wishing you a fabulous week-end..xo HHL
ReplyDeleteI have always loved Monet's paintings too. That is wonderful that you got to spend time in Paris. My daughters traveled there a few years ago, and it really changed their lives - they loved it.

I love Monet's work! It looks like so much fun! Gardening is good for the soul. Now if I could find a crew to come help me with my barren yard! Sigh!
