Book beginnings: Elizabeth and Her German Garden

The first words of "Elizabeth and Her German Garden" by Elizabeth von Arnim
"May 7. I love my garden. I am writing in it now in the late afternoon loveliness, much interrupted by the mosquitoes and the temptation to look at all the glories of the new green leaves washed half an hour ago in a cold shower."
This was published in 1898 anonymously and von Arnim went on to write novels that are still loved to this day. Elizabeth von Arnim is on my list of novelists I want to read. This book explores how she found escape from domestic duties by creating a garden in her husband's family property which had been abandoned for 25 years.
The edition I bought has the above cover and is a Virago Modern Classic, 1985.

I have this book and read bits and pieces of it each year. I kept it by my bed one year when I didn't garden, just for lines like the one you've quoted.

I can't believe you've recently discovered Elizabeth Von Arnim!!

I'm meaning to do a blog post about discovering her books one day soon. What a coincidence! When I read Elizabeth and Her German Garden for the first time a year or so ago, I felt that I had found a friend and a kindred spirit from the past. She wrote a follow up to it, The Solitary Summer, and several other books. They ate in the public domain so can be read for free at Guttenberg or similar sites.

Enjoy!!!! You're going to love this author!

I finished her The Enchanted April a few weeks ago. I smiled my way through it. So much humor, great characters and descriptive passages...
