Greek Festival and Evil Eye Beads

The Concept Studio
Originally uploaded by TutkuTokol

On Sunday my hubby and I enjoyed attending the Greek Festival given twice a year by the congregation of a local Greek Orthodox Church. Delicious food as always. We had moussaka, spanakopita and dolmas.
I treated myself at the festival and bought a bracelet that looks a bit like this one. I found this photo on Flickr.
The beads are the traditional blue and white in concentric circles beads that are worn to ward off the "evil eye."
People in Turkey and Greece put protective bracelets on babies and young children, and hang beads on vehicles and homes too.
The beads remind me of the year I lived in Turkey. I have a necklace and earrings that I bought in Turkey and now a bracelet too.
Do you attend festivals sometimes?

Your bracelet is beautiful. Such rich blues! You might have seen my new "football" bracelet I shared last week after Kaleb's football game.

We have street fairs, and farmers markets on Sunday's in a little town near us. Sometimes we visit those.

Also went to a Strawberry Festival and a Garlic Festival. They are fun, and lots of good food.

Hello:
What enormous fun this sounds to have been. We love anything, such as this Festival, where one gains an insight into another culture, particularly one which is different from one's own.

As for the moussaka, that sounds positively delicious which we are certain an authentically made Greek one would be.

This is probably a great place for children to meet other cultures for the first tame, taste new foods, observe dance, music, activities and artifacts that are unlike anything they see regularly. Oh yes, traveling would be so much richer; but this is a great start.

We try to go to as many festivals as possible. They are usually fun. Last one we attended was a hot pepper one. I can' say it was my favorite.

There is a GO church here that has a wonderful festival for two weekends, this past one and the one before and I missed both times. It is really hard to park. But the food is always incredible and I would have bought the same dishes you did! xo

Thanks for stopping by my blog with kind words about my quilts and books. My books are pattern books, with some design instruction thrown in -- unlike what I presume your books to be. I'm going to check your books out knowing that they must be full of inspiration for living life! Sally

Evil eye beads are quite popular here, too, they are pinned on newborns, worn as necklaces or hung in the home or on rearview mirrors of cars for protection. A very good friend of mine is from Greece -- the boys and I went to visit her several years ago outside of Athens. Love the food! Must make some tzatziki soon. :) Best wishes, Tammy

I love going to Greek Festivals. I love the history and the people, and I am partly of Greek heritage so I find it all so interesting. Oh how I wish I had a BIG piece of Bahklava right now!!

I've never been to a Greek festival but the bracelet is gorgeous and I would love to have it! A friend of mine got a beautiful handcrafted ring from a festival. I will have to look out for one coming up in the future.

We also have a Greek Orthodox Church near our home that hosts an annual Festival. We go for the food...wonderful fried calamari and souvlaki. I love the rich diversity that such events make possible.
